JACKSON, Ky. – For months, Stanley Neace had shown increasing hostility to his neighbors in rural eastern Kentucky, to the point his landlord started eviction proceedings. On Saturday, Neace snapped over how his wife cooked his eggs, and killed her and four others with a shotgun before shooting himself.

But until Tuesday night, nothing and no one could force him to move on.

That’s when the man former neighbors described as “a nut” and “pure evil” was killed in the front yard of the southeast Dallas home that he never could seem to leave after he lost it in 1996.

Police say he was shot by the current resident, Nakisha Kelly, as he harassed her, something authorities and neighbors say he did constantly for the five years she has lived there.

Just because these two are dead doesn’t make it any safer. There are 154 million more of them.

PHILADELPHIA – A Kraft Foods plant worker was suspended from her job because she was feuding with colleagues, then returned minutes later with a handgun and fatally shot two of them and critically wounded a third, police said Friday.

Yvonne Hiller, 43, was escorted from the plant after being told of the suspension about 8:30 p.m. Thursday. But she returned from her vehicle with a .357 magnum, threatened a guard with her gun to get past security, and made her way to the third floor, where she found her victims in a break room, police said.

Hiller told one woman she was free to leave, then fired just three shots, one at each victim, Homicide Capt. James Clark said.

Hiller had been involved in a series of arguments and a few physical altercations in recent years in the mixing area where she worked, police said.

After leaving the break room, Hiller went down a hallway and fired shots at the supervisor who had suspended her along with an employee who was using a walkie-talkie to alert police and co-workers to her whereabouts, police said. She missed both of them.

Hiller then went to a second-floor office, where she called police to tell them what she had done. She had put her gun down by the time officers found her there, Clark said.

The victims were identified as Tanya Renee Wilson, 47; Latonya Sharon Brown, 36; and Bryant A. Dalton; 39, all of Philadelphia. Wilson and Brown died at the plant.

Dalton, shot in the neck, was in critical condition at Jefferson University Hospital, police said.

Hiller was charged with two counts of murder, one count of attempted murder, aggravated assault and other charges. She had a permit to carry the gun, authorities said.

Hiller has worked for Kraft for about 15 years. The Northfield, Ill.-based company makes Oreo cookies, Philadelphia cream cheese, Oscar Mayer bacon and other products.

A French town has banned circus elephants from bathing at its beaches over concerns the animals’ excrement could pollute the water and pose a health hazard to other swimmers.

Last year, elephants from one of the circuses that tour many French towns in the summer months were allowed on to the beach at Granville, in Normandy, to exercise and paddle in the waves.

But inspectors checking water quality found traces of their droppings in the sea and issued a warning over health standards at the beach, which is popular with French and foreign holidaymakers.

U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates hailed security improvements in Iraq on Tuesday in a visit that will touch on possible arms sales as the two nations look toward the withdrawal of all U.S. forces.

Gates also will try to help bridge a deep divide between Iraq’s ethnic Kurds and majority Arabs that many fear may undermine security gains, a senior U.S. Defense official said.

One of the topics they are expected to discuss is Baghdad’s interest in acquiring Lockheed Martin Corp’s F-16 multirole fighter jets to counter possible threats from neighboring nations after U.S. forces leave.

Gates will visit the largely autonomous northern Kurdish region, which appears to be drifting farther from Arab leaders in Baghdad in an impasse over oil and disputed land.

Kurds vow to pursue their claims of areas such as oil-producing Kirkuk as they assert greater control of hydrocarbon reserves.
